Penny Van Hazelberg is a Melbourne-based visual artist whose multidisciplinary practice explores the tensions between financial power, cultural systems and everyday life.

 

His work often examines the relationship between global financial conglomerates and the individual citizen, offering a distinct street-level perspective on a world reshaped by the social, political and economic shifts in a post 9/11 world.

 

Initially working in music as a producer and songwriter, Van Hazelberg toured with bands including Surfing and Creeps. His approach to music—sampling, layering, referencing and recontextualising existing material—continues to inform his visual practice. Translated into the gallery and domestic sphere, these methods become tools for investigating how images, objects and cultural fragments accumulate meaning.

 

Working across painting, collage, sculpture and furniture, often combining found imagery, materials and references to construct works that feel simultaneously familiar and displaced. His practice draws connections between the personal and the systemic, the domestic and the geopolitical, finding points of tension within the visual language of contemporary life.
